Facilities and Resources Supported by Core A:

1. Energy expenditure and body composition in humans

Doubly-labeled water for measurement of free-living energy expenditure over 1-2 weeks with on-site analysis by isotope ratio mass spectrometry
Underwater weighing and BodPod for measurement of whole body density
Dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) for measurement of regional or whole body bone, fat, and soft lean tissue
Total body water by isotope dilution
Multi-compartment models of body composition
Analysis of regional body composition (subcutaneous, and visceral adipose tissue) from computed tomography scans performed in the Department of Radiology at the UAB Hospital

2. Glucose, lipids, hormones

Analysis of insulin, glocose, lipids and numerous hormones related to nutrition and metabolism

3. Insulin Sensitivity testing

Insulin sensitivity testing using an oral glucose or liquid mixed meal tolerance test and mathematical modeling
Characterization of insulin secretion using dynamic tests and mathematical moldeing of C-peptide data
