August 9, 2016

Amber W. Kinsey, PhD, CISSNAmber W. Kinsey, PhD, CISSN, postdoctoral fellow in the Nutrition Obesity Research Center (NORC) and Office of Energetics, has been funded by UAB’s Office of Postdoctoral Education to participate in the 2016 Physical Activity and Public Health (PAPH) Course on Research Directions and Strategies sponsored by the University of South Carolina, to be held September 13–21 in Columbia. The course was created to “develop research competencies related to physical activity and public health,” with a long-term goal to increase the number of researchers and practitioners with the necessary expertise to educate and assist the population at large.

Dr. Kinsey is among a select group of participants who will benefit from acquiring critical information pertaining to such topics as skills for obtaining grants; opportunities for attaining research funding; ways to measure physical activity; the design of epidemiologic studies; issues related to dose response; interventions regarding individuals, communities, and policies; and the needs of physical activity research related to women, youth, the elderly, and minorities. Techniques are shared through lectures, small group discussions, and one-on-one meetings with faculty, as well as through individual grant writing projects.

Her research interests include pediatric obesity, minority health and health disparities, and behavioral interventions for obesity prevention and treatment.
