Dr. Chandler-Laney is an assistant professor in the Department of Nutrition Sciences. She earned a B.A. (3-year program) in psychology from the University of Auckland, in her native country, New Zealand. She went on to complete a B.S. (4-year program) in psychology at UAB in 2000. In 2006, she completed her Ph.D. in behavioral neuroscience at UAB. Dr. Chandler-Laney's dissertation, under the mentorship of Dr. Mary Boggiano, investigated the neurochemical and behavioral consequences of a history of dieting and weight cycling, using a rodent model. During her Ph.D. training, she also explored changes in the feeding response to melanocortin peptides and to satiety hormones during the development of high fat diet-induced obesity.
Dr. Chandler-Laney conducted her postdoctoral research under the mentorship of Dr. Barbara Gower and Dr. Gary Hunter. She is involved in a number of clinical research projects, including the use of behavioral and/or psychological parameters to predict success in weight loss and maintenance programs; the association between satiety hormones and subjective responses; and an investigation of childhood body composition and metabolic health consequences of intrauterine exposure to gestational diabetes and maternal obesity.
