I joined the UAB Nutrition and Obesity Research Center in the Department of Cell, Developmental, and Integrative Biology in November, 2011. I am working under the primary mentorship of Dr Marcas Bamman in the Core Muscle Research Laboratory. Our research laboratory is interested in optimizing exercise treatment strategies for chronic conditions, disease prevention, and rehabilitation using a dose-response approach to exercise prescription. My fundamental research interest is to develop rehabilitation/exercise and nutrition interventions that can improve cardiovascular and metabolic health in individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI). I am specifically interested in the effects of neuromuscular electrical stimulation -induced contractile activity on glucose uptake signaling and signaling for muscle growth in the paralyzed muscle.
I received my PhD from Auburn University in Neuromechanics in August 2011. As a doctoral fellow at Neuromechanics Research Laboratory, I carried out research projects investigating effects of various exercise, rehabilitation and massage interventions on sensori-motor and cardiovascular systems in able-bodied individuals and individuals with SCI. Previously; I received my B.S. degree in Physical Therapy from Baskent University in Turkey.
