Yongbin Yang , graduate research assistant in the Department of Nutrition Sciences , was recently selected as one of six winners of the second annual Basic Science Section (BSS)  Poster of Excellence Award, present by The Obesity Society  (TOS). His abstract “Weight Cycling Does Not Increase Relative Body Fat of Mice” was judged to be one of the best in the field. Yongbin will receive special recognition at the annual BSS meeting held on Thursday, November 14, 2013, at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta during ObesityWeek 2013 . The award will also be highlighted in the Obesity Week program.
The BSS supports and promotes basic scientific efforts to understand the causes and complications of obesity and to identify mechanisms that lead to its prevention or cure. Among its goals is to promote mentoring, networking, and collaborations among researchers, as well as to increase the national visibility of obesity research and awareness of the important unanswered questions.
Obesity Week is a unique, international event focused on the basic science, clinical application, surgical intervention, and prevention of obesity, bringing together world-renowned experts to share innovation and breakthroughs in science. Yongbin and other attendees will experience diverse educational opportunities, networking events, and scientific synergies.
Yongbin graduated from Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine  (Shanghai, China) with a B.S. in Nutrition Sciences. He is currently working with David B. Allison, PhD,  director of the NORC  (and PI on this study), along with department colleagues Professor and Vice Chair for Research Timothy R. Nagy, PhD,  (and co-PI), and Assistant Professor Daniel L. Smith, Jr., PhD,  on a mice longevity study that investigates obesity, calorie restriction, and weight cycles.
