Research Interests:

Dr Retta Evans’ research interests include adolescent behaviors related to physical activity and nutrition, youth obesity, school wellness, youth risk behaviors, and women's health. She has published in many health related national journals and presents at regional, national and international health related conferences. Dr. Evans has over 10 years of experience working with school aged children and providing school health interventions in the classroom and gymnasium. She has worked with health educators and physical educators across the southeast, trying to establish quality health and physical activity initiatives in school settings. She has experience in administering grant funded projects that involve physical activity vignettes for individuals with disabilities, health risk behaviors among college students and the development and implementation of a coordinated school health and nutrition program.

Service and Teaching:

Dr Evans’ serves on the State Coordinated School Health Advisory Committee which provides strategic planning and recommendations for changes in school health policy. She is an active member of the State Obesity Task Force aligned with the Alabama Department of Public Health. Dr Evans also serves on the Jefferson County Health Action Partnership, Healthy Children and Youth priority committee. She also volunteers her time with health initiatives at the YMCA and Jones Valley Teaching Farms. Dr Evans is Past-President of ASAHPERD (Ala Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance), which promotes and advocates for a healthy active Alabama. SHE has mentored graduate students at UAB since 2004 and received the UAB mentoring award in 2008 and 2017 as well as the University Health Educator of the Year in 2009 (Southern District American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance). Dr Evans has spent the last 16 years teaching undergraduate and graduate students in the field of health education.
